View of St. Mark's Church coming from Main Street

Most events are held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic, CT 06355. Events held at other locations are emphasized by this font. Holy days and most secular holidays are noted this way. 17 Pentecost, for example, means the 17th Sunday after Pentecost.

Daily or weekly events, such as Morning Prayer, the Holy Eucharist at StoneRidge, are described in detail on the Description & Schedule Page, along with some monthly events such as the Healing Service.

In September we say farewell to "Lemonade on the Lawn" until Memorial Day Weekend of 2009. Now that summer is winding down and public school has resumed, activities such as Church School, choir and handbell practice are starting up again. Church School resumes with Balloon Sunday and a Parish Breakfast on the 14th of September. Handbell and adult choir rehearsals resume their regular schedules starting on the 11th, with children's choir beginning later in the month.

The chrysanthemum sale was a success! All the mums sold, yielding $240 to benefit the Altar Guild. Thank you, everyone!

Adult Forum resumes on the 21st, giving us an opportunity to get to know each other better and learn at the same time. The topic for the Adult Forum on the 28th is the potential projects for the Capital Campaign; everyone is encouraged to attend so that all voices will be heard. The book discussion group Theology Sandwiched In returns on the 23rd with what is sure to be an interesting session. Everyone is welcome at the Hymn Sing & Potluck Supper on the 28th!

There will be a Training Breakfast for Greeters Saturday October 4th. The annual Blessing of the Animals will be held on Sunday October 5th. (Update: There is now a Page of photographs.) There are previews of coming events following the listing of September special events.

Church School to Mystic Manor - September 6th and October 4th at 10:00 AM

For the past six years, on the first Saturday of each month a group of St. Mark's Church School teachers, their children and grandchildren, and many of the children from the Church School and their parents visit the residents of Mystic Manor.

We do a seasonal craft, which usually consists of a drawing that we color and decorate with flowers, stickers, etc. Two or three times a year we have a party at Mystic Manor, to which we bring cookies and cupcakes. Mark Wydler plays his guitar and leads us all in song. Fr. Mark Santucci gives much comfort and cheer to all.

The Chrysanthemums Sale to benefit the Altar Guild was very successful.

Photograph of colorful chrysanthemums

$240.00 was raised at this sale of mums from Pequot Plant Farm which benefits the Altar Guild. Thank you to all who worked on the Sale and bought mums!

Fr. Mark looks at chrysanthemums as heralding a sort of non-religious autumnal Easter. Chrysanthemums bring promise of new life in the fall when other plants' colors are fading and the days are getting shorter.

The breakfast was held in the Undercroft at 9 AM. Parent and children met all of the Church School teachers and learned about the Church School's plans and activities for this fall.

Registration for church school took place during breakfast. Church School classes were held following the breakfast at the usual time of 9:45.

The Adult Forum will begin on Sunday, September 21st at the usual time of 9 AM.

Theology Sandwiched In - Tuesday, September 23rd at 12:30 PM

September's book is In the Eye of the Storm: Swept to the Center by God by Bishop Gene Robinson.

Each month a different book is chosen for reading and discussion. People usually bring a bag lunch; beverages are provided.

New Hampshire Bishop Robinson was thrust into the middle of the storm when he became the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church. This book offers an honest, thoughtful portrait of Bishop Robinson, the faith that has informed his life, and the controversy that continues to rock the Church. In the Eye of the Storm "eloquently reaffirms the simple truth that God's love protects all of us in the eye of any storm. It also chronicles how God's love continues to melt away prejudice, intolerance, and hatred in today's world.", said Dick Gephardt, former U.S. Representative from Missouri and House Majority Leader from 1995 to 2003.

Remember to ask for your reading group discount at Bank Square Books (external Site). Our discussion will be on Tuesday, September 23 from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM.

Seabury Deanery Meeting - Tuesday, September 23rd at 7:00 PM

September's meeting will be at St. James Church in New London (external Site),

Seabury Deanery is an affiliation of Episcopal Churches in Southeastern Connecticut. Member churches include St. Mark's Church in Mystic, St. David's Church in Gales Ferry (external Site), Grace Church in Yantic (external Site), Christ Episcopal Church in Norwich (external Site), Calvary Church in Stonington (external Site), St. James Church in New London (external Site), St. John's Church in Niantic (external Site), and St. James Church in Poquetanuck (external Site).

"The Diocese [of Connecticut] is divided into 14 geographic units called deaneries, each with an elected dean, sub-dean, secretary and treasurer. These were established decades ago as a way to improve communication and encourage collaborative ministry, and replaced an older model of archdeaconries."

"The diocesan bishop views the deanery system as a helpful way to gather clergy and parishes regionally. Confirmations are held on a deanery basis, and bishops meet with each deanery's clergy on a regular basis. Elected lay delegates to convention serve as delegates to their deanery as well."

(The two quoted paragraphs are from the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut Web Site (external Site).

Previews of Coming Events

Training Breakfast for Greeters - Saturday, October 4th from 8:00 AM to 8:45 AM

One of the most important aspects of St. Mark's mission is to make everyone feel welcome at church. We strive to be an inclusive community where everyone feels at home.

Having greeters at each service to welcome everyone to worship is an important part of the ministry of welcome, and we need your help. There will be a training breakfast for greeters on Saturday, October 4 from 8 to 8:45 AM. If you could help us with this ministry of welcome, please come to the breakfast and find out more about being a greeter. For details or to volunteer please talk to Gordon F. or Nicky T.

We will gather at 9:00 in the barking ... oops, parking lot for the blessing of all our animals, including stuffed animals. In case of rain we will be in the Undercroft. An interspecies social hour will follow, with snacks for all of God's creatures.
