October 2008 Calendar
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Mystic, Connecticut |

Most events are held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic, CT 06355. Events held at other locations are emphasized by this font. Holy days and most secular holidays are noted this way. 21 Pentecost, for example, means the 21st Sunday after Pentecost.
Daily or weekly events, such as Morning Prayer, the Holy Eucharist at StoneRidge, are described in detail on the Description & Schedule Page, along with some monthly events such as the Healing Service.
There was a Training Breakfast for Greeters on Saturday October 4th because we strive to be an inclusive community where everyone feels at home.
St. Mark's celebrates the annual Blessing of the Animals on the Sunday closest to the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. This year's celebration was on October 5th; it was so much fun that there is a whole Page of photographs!
The Adult Forum topic for the 12th is the potential projects for the Capital Campaign; everyone is encouraged to attend so that all voices will be heard.
The 2008 CROP Walk took place on the 19th. There are photos of St. Mark's walkers. It is not too late to contribute!
There are previews of coming events following the listing of October special events.

One of the most important aspects of St. Mark's mission is to make everyone feel welcome at church. We strive to be an inclusive community where everyone feels at home.
Having greeters at each service to welcome everyone to worship is an important part of the ministry of welcome, and we need your help. There will be a training breakfast for greeters on Saturday, November 4 from 8 to 8:45 AM. If you could help us with this ministry of welcome, please come to the breakfast and find out more about being a greeter. For details or to volunteer please talk to Gordon F. or Nicky T.

For the past six years, on the first Saturday of each month a group of St. Mark's Church School teachers, their children and grandchildren, and many of the children from the Church School and their parents visit the residents of Mystic Manor.
We do a seasonal craft, which usually consists of a drawing that we color and decorate with flowers, stickers, etc. Two or three times a year we have a party at Mystic Manor, to which we bring cookies and cupcakes. Mark Wydler plays his guitar and leads us all in song. Fr. Mark Santucci gives much comfort and cheer to all.

Saint Mark's congregation was increased by leaps and bounds, barks and meows, on Sunday, October 5th as we gathered for our annual Blessing of the Animals, held each year on the Sunday closest to the Feast of St. Francis.
In spite of dark clouds and sprinkles, we had a wonderful assortment of creatures great and small. There were mostly cats and dogs, but we noticed an elephant and a tiger, and even a hermit crab.
Following the short service of thanksgiving and blessing, an interspecies social hour was held with snacks appropriate for each of God's creatures. Every creature seemed to enjoy the service and the refreshments.

Work is being completed on gathering estimates for possible Capital Campaign projects. Two forums were scheduled to discuss the potential projects with members of the parish, one in September and the other in October.
There will also be lots of volunteers needed as the Campaign gets ready to begin in late October. Please see Senior Warden Kurt C. for details.

We made lots of pies in a short time. Everyone who came was a part of the work, the community, and the fun. This year we made pies in two sizes, small and large, so that single people won't have to worry about having apple pie for weeks at a time, and larger families can share easily.

CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. CROP Walks support the work of Church World Services (external Site), an ecumenical organization of many denominations.
The Walk started at St. Mark's, then went to Noank Baptist Church and back. The Walk is always held, no matter what the weather. As you see in the photos, above, the walkers were prepared for the chilly weather this year. One quarter of the funds raised by the annual walk are returned to the Mystic Area Ecumenical Council-related charities MASH (Mystic Area Shelter and Hospitality) and Care and Share. It's not too late to contribute to this cause!

Each month a different book is chosen for reading and discussion. People usually bring a bag lunch; beverages are provided.
In the aftermath of the October 2, 2006, massacre at the Nickel Mines School, much was made about the quick response the Amish made in forgiving the shooter. However, there were also many questions asked, and many dubious conclusions drawn from their forgiveness. Three experts on the Amish community talked with the Amish themselves, and sought to gain a true understanding of the Amish, their faith, and their forgiveness. Amish Grace gives an in-depth explanation of Amish forgiveness in the context of their lives and theology (which are not truly separable).
This is not a dispassionate, academic book. The tragedy that occurred that day echoes and re-echoes throughout the book, and the Amish forgiveness is shown to have come from deeper within them than people might think.
Remember to ask for your reading group discount at Bank Square Books (external Site). Our discussion will be on Tuesday, October 23 from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM.

Seabury Deanery is an affiliation of Episcopal Churches in Southeastern Connecticut. Member churches include St. Mark's Church in Mystic, St. David's Church in Gales Ferry (external Site), Grace Church in Yantic (external Site), Christ Episcopal Church in Norwich (external Site), Calvary Church in Stonington (external Site), St. James Church in New London (external Site), St. John's Church in Niantic (external Site), and St. James Church in Poquetanuck (external Site).
"The Diocese [of Connecticut] is divided into 14 geographic units called deaneries, each with an elected dean, sub-dean, secretary and treasurer. These were established decades ago as a way to improve communication and encourage collaborative ministry, and replaced an older model of archdeaconries."
"The diocesan bishop views the deanery system as a helpful way to gather clergy and parishes regionally. Confirmations are held on a deanery basis, and bishops meet with each deanery's clergy on a regular basis. Elected lay delegates to convention serve as delegates to their deanery as well."
(The two quoted paragraphs are from the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut Web Site (external Site).
