View of St. Mark's Church coming from Main Street

Most events are held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic, CT 06355. Events held at other locations are emphasized by this font. Holy days and most secular holidays are noted this way. 26 Pentecost, for example, means the 26th Sunday after Pentecost.

Daily or weekly events, such as Morning Prayer, the Holy Eucharist at StoneRidge, are described in detail on the Description & Schedule Page, along with some monthly events such as the Healing Service.

St. Mark's Capital Campaign Kickoff Brunch was held on November 16th. It was catered and was designed so that everyone can enjoy the fellowship as we began this important work. In order to prepare for the Brunch, there was no 8:00 AM Eucharist on the 16th. (To see updates on the Capital Campaign, please visit the Capital Campaign Update Page.)

St. Mark's annual Holiday Bazaar was held on November 22nd this year. There are always bargains in crafts, quilts, and more.

Be sure to see the photos of this year's Thanksgiving Dinner. More than 130 people were served in the Undercroft and more than 160 dinners were taken to people who could not be with us. Everyone is always welcome at the annual Thanksgiving Dinner, which was served on the 27th at 1:00 PM in the Undercroft. It is a time for sharing with the whole community, not just members of the parish!

November Special Events

Church School to Mystic Manor - November 1st and December 6th at 10:00 AM

For the past six years, on the first Saturday of each month a group of St. Mark's Church School teachers, their children and grandchildren, and many of the children from the Church School and their parents visit the residents of Mystic Manor.

We do a seasonal craft, which usually consists of a drawing that we color and decorate with flowers, stickers, etc. Two or three times a year we have a party at Mystic Manor, to which we bring cookies and cupcakes. Mark Wydler plays his guitar and leads us all in song. Fr. Mark Santucci gives much comfort and cheer to all.

Capital Campaign Kickoff Brunch - Sunday, November 16th at the 11:00 AM

About 100 people joined us to learn about the proposed projects.

The purpose of having a catered brunch was so that everyone could hear about the projects that need to be completed. Nobody had to be working in the kitchen, serving, or cleaning up.

In order for everyone to worship together and to prepare for the Brunch, there was no 8:00 AM service on the 16th.

Theology Sandwiched In - Tuesday, November 25th at 12:30 PM

November's book is Inheriting the Trade by Thomas Norman DeWolf.

Each month a different book is chosen for reading and discussion. People usually bring a bag lunch; beverages are provided.

Inheriting the Trade is subtitled "A northern family confronts its legacy as the largest slave-trading dynasty in U.S. history". The author writes "A friend of mine, after reading part of the unfinished manuscript that eventually became Inheriting the Trade, told me she felt - in addition to relating the story of the journey ten people took during the summer of 2001 to retrace the steps of their slave-trading ancestors through the notorious Triangle Trade from New England to Ghana and Cuba and back - that this is also an invitation to a deeper conversation. [....] On the surface, Inheriting the Trade is a story about the legacy of slavery and how it continues to impact relationships among people of different races today. By digging deeper, readers will see connections between racism, sexism, religious intolerance, and oppression along class, age, and other lines."

Mr. DeWolf was inspired to write Inheriting the Trade during the making of the documentary film Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North. In December we will be watching the film.

Remember to ask for your reading group discount at Bank Square Books (external Site). Our discussion will be on Tuesday, November 25 from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM.

More about the book can be read at the "About" section of WWW.InheritingTheTrade.Com (external Site).

Seabury Deanery Meeting - Tuesday, November 25th at 7:00 PM

November's meeting will be at St. James Church in Poquetanuck (external Site).

Seabury Deanery is an affiliation of Episcopal Churches in Southeastern Connecticut. Member churches include St. Mark's Church in Mystic, St. David's Church in Gales Ferry (external Site), Grace Church in Yantic (external Site), Christ Episcopal Church in Norwich (external Site), Calvary Church in Stonington (external Site), St. James Church in New London (external Site), St. John's Church in Niantic (external Site), and St. James Church in Poquetanuck (external Site).

"The Diocese [of Connecticut] is divided into 14 geographic units called deaneries, each with an elected dean, sub-dean, secretary and treasurer. These were established decades ago as a way to improve communication and encourage collaborative ministry, and replaced an older model of archdeaconries."

"The diocesan bishop views the deanery system as a helpful way to gather clergy and parishes regionally. Confirmations are held on a deanery basis, and bishops meet with each deanery's clergy on a regular basis. Elected lay delegates to convention serve as delegates to their deanery as well."

(The two quoted paragraphs are from the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut Web Site (external Site).
