View of St. Mark's Church coming from Main Street

Most events are held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic, CT 06355. Events held at other locations are emphasized by this font. Holy days and most secular holidays are noted this way. 4 Epiphany, for example, means the 4th Sunday after The Epiphany.

Daily or weekly events, such as Morning Prayer, the Holy Eucharist at StoneRidge, are described in detail on the Description & Schedule Page, along with some monthly events such as the Healing Service.

Please note the change in rehearsal time for the Handbell Choir: The Handbell Choir will rehearse at 12:30 PM on Sundays.

Please note the change in rehearsal time for the Choir during Lent: The Choir will rehearse at 8:00 PM on Wednesdays, beginning on the 25th of February, following the Ash Wednesday service.

Each year St. Mark's Church plans special programs and events during the pre-Lenten and Lenten seasons. Photos of our annual Mardi Gras Party on Saturday the 21st and Pancake Supper on Shrove Tuesday the 24th show people enjoying the festivity before the solemnity of Lent; some other folks were camera-shy. There are photos of the Church School program on Haiti from Saturday the 28th.

Lent began with Ash Wednesday on February 25th and continues for 46 days, concluding on Saturday the 11th of April. The six Sundays are not counted as part of Lent's 40 days because each Sunday is a feast day, a "mini-Easter" celebrating Jesus's resurrection and His victory over sin and death.

On Wednesdays during Lent we will gather for a Contemplative Eucharist. Thursday's Bible Study group will continue to meet during Lent. On Fridays we walk the Way of the Cross, a simple and moving Lenten remembrance of Jesus's journey to the cross. We will meet on Sunday evening for a special Lenten Book Group. Please see the Lenten Programs Page for a full description of these programs.

On Saturday the 28th the Church School gathered for special activities and food. There are pictures of the Church School gathering below.

Check out the Previews of Coming Events for information about the annual Parish Retreat coming in March.

Church School to Mystic Manor - Saturday February 7 at 10:00 AM

For the past six years, on the first Saturday of each month a group of St. Mark's Church School teachers, their children and grandchildren, and many of the children from the Church School and their parents visit the residents of Mystic Manor.

We do a seasonal craft, which usually consists of a drawing that we color and decorate with flowers, stickers, etc. Two or three times a year we have a party at Mystic Manor, to which we bring cookies and cupcakes. Mark Wydler plays his guitar and leads us all in song. Fr. Mark Santucci gives much comfort and cheer to all.

Mardi Gras Party - Saturday February 21st at 6:30 PM

Mardi Gras mask Don't throw away your Halloween costume – you can use it to celebrate Mardi Gras at St. Mark's!

Mardi Gras is a time for celebration before the solemnity of Lent, and we had a fun night for the whole family. There was a King Cake, plenty of food, and games for all ages.

Mardi Gras Party - Making masques People made masques from feathers, glitter, beads, and other material.

Everyone enjoyed a "Who am I?" game: Fr. Mark had printed names of famous people, living and dead, on labels and stuck one label on each person's back. The object of the game was to guess your identity by asking only questions that could be answered "Yes." or "No." (Maybe the game should be called "Identity Crisis".) Names ranged from St. Peter to Barbara Bush, General Custer to Joe Namath, and Scooby-Doo to Sponge Bob Square Pants. Fr. Mark chose character names to match those present wisely; younger people got the Sponge Bob end of the spectrum, while the chronologically gifted got historical figures.

The King Cake People who didn't attend the Mardi Gras Party have asked what a King Cake is. The Mardi Gras King Cake is a twisted sweet bread, topped with icing and colored sugar of purple, green, and gold. The King Cake contains a small plastic baby; the recipient of the piece of cake with the baby is crowned King of Mardi Gras. Our Mardi Gras Party King (seen below) received gold foil-wrapped chocolate "money" from his subjects. Traditionally, the King was responsible for throwing the next year's party, but we don't follow that particular tradition.

The hunter and the cat We couldn't possibly divulge who made the King Cake, but we can hint that it is the same person who is the hunter with the knife in the photo. (Ask the cat in the photo about her whiskers getting singed.)

Theology Sandwiched In - Tuesday, February 24 at 12:30 PM

The book for February will be He Loves Me! Learning To Live in the Father's Affection by Wayne Jacobsen.

Each month a different book is chosen for reading and discussion. People usually bring a bag lunch; beverages are provided.

Author Wayne Jacobsen writes with empathy about Christians sometimes doubting God's love for them. Humans are God's beloved creation, the author asserts, and God loves us all the time, unconditionally. "Insecure Christians ready for a revolutionary relationship with God will find out just how accessible that is."

Remember to ask for your reading group discount at Bank Square Books (external Site). Our discussion will be on Tuesday, February 24 at 12:30 PM.

"The Diocese [of Connecticut] is divided into 14 geographic units called deaneries, each with an elected dean, sub-dean, secretary and treasurer. These were established decades ago as a way to improve communication and encourage collaborative ministry, and replaced an older model of archdeaconries."

"The diocesan bishop views the deanery system as a helpful way to gather clergy and parishes regionally. Confirmations are held on a deanery basis, and bishops meet with each deanery's clergy on a regular basis. Elected lay delegates to convention serve as delegates to their deanery as well."

(The two quoted paragraphs are from the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut Web Site (external Site).

Church School Gathering - Saturday, February 28th from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM

St. Mark's Church School students, their parents, and teachers gathered for an afternoon of learning and activities related to Lent and our ministry with Haiti.

Included were a story, discussion, and we made things to send to the people of our partner parish, St. Luc's Church and School, to help them get to know us. The afternoon ended with a shared meal (both Haitian and American food).

The World Day of Prayer is held each year on the first Friday of March. This year the World Day of Prayer will be celebrated locally at the Mystic Congregational Church (external Site), 43 East Main Street, Mystic, CT.

Women from area churches will lead the service using material written by the women of Papua New Guinea on the theme "In Christ there are many members yet only one body." Rev. Barbara Marston, Interim Pastor at Union Baptist Church, will be the speaker.

There will be a social time after the service. Everyone is welcome!

Annual Parish Retreat - Friday, March 13th through Sunday, March 15th

St. Mark's annual parish retreat will be held at the Enders Island retreat center Friday evening, March 13th through Sunday afternoon, March 15th.
