	March 2009 Calendar   St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Mystic, Connecticut

Most events are held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic, CT 06355. Events held at other locations are emphasized by this font. Holy days and most secular holidays are noted this way. 1 Lent, for example, means the 1^st Sunday in Lent.

Daily or weekly events, such as Morning Prayer, the Holy Eucharist at StoneRidge, are described in detail on the Description & Schedule Page, along with some monthly events such as the Healing Service.

Lent began with Ash Wednesday on February 25^th and continues for 46 days, concluding on Saturday the 11^th of April. The six Sundays are not counted as part of Lent's 40 days because each Sunday is a feast day, a "mini-Easter" celebrating Jesus's resurrection and His victory over sin and death.

Each year St. Mark's Church plans special programs and events during the Lenten season. On Wednesdays we will gather for a Contemplative Eucharist. Thursday's Bible Study group will continue to meet during Lent. On Fridays we walk the Way of the Cross, a simple and moving Lenten remembrance of Jesus's journey to the cross. We will meet on Sunday evenings for a special Lenten Book Group. Please see the Lenten Programs Page for a full description of these programs. The 2009 Holy Week and Easter schedule and April 2009 Calendar are also available.

Please note the change in rehearsal times for the Choir and handbells during Lent: The Choir will rehearse at 8:00 PM on Wednesdays, following the Contemplative Eucharist. Handbell rehearsals are on Sundays at 12:30 PM.

Lenten Book Group - Sundays, beginning at 6:30 PM

Using Nancy Roth's book Grounded in Love: Ecology, Faith and Action as a guide, we will learn about and reflect upon our life together on the Earth and discuss the connections among ecology, faith, and action.

The first discussion, planned for the 1^st of March, was postponed due to weather. More information and the revised schedule is on the Lenten Programs Page.

Bible Study - Thursdays, beginning at 8:00 AM

The Thursday morning Bible Study will read and discuss a special book chosen for this Lent.

World Day of Prayer - Friday, March 6^th at 9:30 AM

The World Day of Prayer is held each year on the first Friday of March. This year the World Day of Prayer will be celebrated locally at the Mystic Congregational Church (external Site), 43 East Main Street, Mystic, CT.

Women from area churches will lead the service using material written by the women of Papua New Guinea on the theme "In Christ there are many members yet only one body." Rev. Barbara Marston, Interim Pastor at Union Baptist Church, will be the speaker.

There will be a social time after the service. Everyone is welcome!

Church School to Mystic Manor - Saturday March 7 at 10:00 AM

For the past six years, on the first Saturday of each month a group of St. Mark's Church School teachers, their children and grandchildren, and many of the children from the Church School and their parents visit the residents of Mystic Manor.

We do a seasonal craft, which usually consists of a drawing that we color and decorate with flowers, stickers, etc. Two or three times a year we have a party at Mystic Manor, to which we bring cookies and cupcakes. Mark Wydler plays his guitar and leads us all in song. Fr. Mark Santucci gives much comfort and cheer to all.

Annual Parish Retreat - Friday, March 13^th through Sunday, March 15^th

St. Mark's annual parish retreat will be held at the Enders Island retreat center Friday evening, March 13^th through Sunday afternoon, March 15^th.

We are thrilled that Sister Leslie, from the Community of the Holy Spirit, will be our retreat leader again this year. Places on the retreat are limited, so make your reservation now. Please talk to Fr. Mark Santucci if you are interested or have any questions.

Take time to nourish your spiritual life. Make the retreat your Lenten present to yourself.

Mystic Area Choir Festival - Sunday, March 22 at 4:00 PM

The Mystic Area Ecumenical Council's annual Choir Festival was held at Noank Baptist Church. Members of St. Mark's children's choir joined choristers from other area churches in the Ecumenical Council's annual concert.

The guest director of this year's festival was Michael Bedford, who is the Organist, Choirmaster, and Composer-in-Residence at St. John's Episcopal Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Theology Sandwiched In - Tuesday, March 24 at 12:30 PM

Each month a different book is chosen for reading and discussion. People usually bring a bag lunch; beverages are provided.

Seabury Deanery Meeting - Tuesday, March 24 at 7:00 PM

March's meeting will be at St. James Church in New London (external Site).

Seabury Deanery is an affiliation of Episcopal Churches in Southeastern Connecticut. Member churches include St. Mark's Church in Mystic, Christ Episcopal Church in Norwich (external Site), Grace Church in Yantic (external Site), Calvary Church in Stonington (external Site), St. James Church in Poquetanuck (external Site), St. David's Church in Gales Ferry (external Site), St. John's Church in Niantic (external Site), and St. James Church in New London (external Site).

"The Diocese [of Connecticut] is divided into 14 geographic units called deaneries, each with an elected dean, sub-dean, secretary and treasurer. These were established decades ago as a way to improve communication and encourage collaborative ministry, and replaced an older model of archdeaconries."

"The diocesan bishop views the deanery system as a helpful way to gather clergy and parishes regionally. Confirmations are held on a deanery basis, and bishops meet with each deanery's clergy on a regular basis. Elected lay delegates to convention serve as delegates to their deanery as well."
