April 2009 Calendar
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Mystic, Connecticut |
![]() |
Most events are held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic, CT 06355. Events held at other locations are emphasized by this font. Holy days and most secular holidays are noted this way. 5 Lent, for example, means the 5th Sunday in Lent.
Daily or weekly events, such as Morning Prayer, the Holy Eucharist at StoneRidge, are described in detail on the Description & Schedule Page, along with some monthly events such as the Healing Service.
At the Progressive Supper and Lionheart Award presentation we honored three members of St. Mark's Parish for long and faithful service.
Lent began with Ash Wednesday on February 25th and continued for 46 days, concluding on Saturday the 11th of April. The six Sundays are not counted as part of Lent's 40 days because each Sunday is a feast day, a "mini-Easter" celebrating Jesus's resurrection and His victory over sin and death.
Each year St. Mark's Church plans special programs and events during the Lenten season. On Wednesdays we gathered for a Contemplative Eucharist. Thursday's Bible Study group continued to meet during Lent. On Fridays we walked the Way of the Cross, a simple and moving Lenten remembrance of Jesus's journey to the cross. We met on Sunday evenings for a special Lenten Book Group. Please see the 2009 Lenten Programs Page for a full description of these programs. The 2009 Holy Week and Easter schedule is also available separately.
Please note the change in rehearsal times for the Choir during Lent: The Choir rehearsed on Wednesdays April 1st and 8th, following the Contemplative Eucharist. Thursday Choir rehearsals resumed on the 16th. Handbell rehearsals will remain on Sundays at 12:30 PM during and after Lent.

Our Annual Spring Clean-up began on Saturday morning, April 4 at 9 AM.
Many thanks to all the volunteers!

For the past six years, on the first Saturday of each month a group of St. Mark's Church School teachers, their children and grandchildren, and many of the children from the Church School and their parents visit the residents of Mystic Manor.
We do a seasonal craft, which usually consists of a drawing that we color and decorate with flowers, stickers, etc. Two or three times a year we have a party at Mystic Manor, to which we bring cookies and cupcakes. Mark Wydler plays his guitar and leads us all in song. Fr. Mark Santucci gives much comfort and cheer to all.

Our annual Ecumenical Palm Blessing and Procession began in Mystic River Park (external Site), a short walk across the Mystic River, at 9:30 AM.
Together with our brothers and sisters from other denominations, we bless our palms in an ecumenical service.
Special thanks to Bob Welt for these outstanding photographs!
|
After the service of palm blessing, we process to our several churches for the reading of the passion and Eucharist. |
During the procession we cross the Mystic River by way of the Mystic River Bascule Bridge.
From the Park to St. Mark's is about a quarter mile.
There are people who park their cars near Mystic River Park, walk with the procession to St. Mark's, and after the service carpool with other parishioners to go back to their cars at the Park.
St. Mark's says "Thank you" to the person who allowed us to use the Mystic River Bascule Bridge photograph from Wikipedia. Please honor the Creative Commons copyright if you would like to download and use the Bascule Bridge photograph. Please download the full-size image at Wikipedia.

Using Nancy Roth's book Grounded in Love: Ecology, Faith and Action as a guide, we will learn about and reflect upon our life together on the Earth and discuss the connections among ecology, faith, and action.
More information and the revised schedule is on the Lenten Programs Page.
Back to April 5 Back to top of April 2009 calendarA family potluck supper was part of our observance this year. We began in the church at 6 PM for the liturgy of the Word and the telling of the Holy Thursday story. From the sanctuary, we moved to the Undercroft to break bread in Eucharist and in our potluck supper.
Those who wished to do so returned to the church for the stripping of the altar. Many people find this solemn service to be very moving. As usual, an overnight prayer vigil was kept in the Parish Library until the Good Friday Liturgy.
Back to April 9 Back to top of April 2009 calendarThis one-hour service included solemn prayers and Communion from the sacrament that was consecrated on Maundy Thursday and kept on the Altar of Repose over night.
The Stations of the Cross were walked beginning at 6 PM.
Back to April 10 Back to top of April 2009 calendarThe Great Vigil of Easter is a liturgy not to be missed. Beginning in the dark night of Good Friday and ending in the light of Easter morning, the vigil includes remembrance of God's deliverance through the ages, baptism, and the first Eucharist of Easter.

Each year we gather for a time of fellowship and appetizers, then go in small groups to Parish members' homes for the main course, and finally come back together in the Undercroft for desert and the presentation of the Lionheart Award.
Everyone who attended St. Mark's Progressive Supper thanks Don Simpson for hosting us for the social hour & appetizers, all the people who cooked and served the main courses, and the great cooks who made the brownies, fruit salad, and cakes for desert!
The Lionheart Award is presented to a member of the Parish who has, for years, exemplified the qualities of stewardship and Christian love by giving time, talent, and treasure.
This year the Lionheart Award was presented to one individual and one couple. Wil Schroder has been the Verger at St. Mark's for many years and has faithfully lead Morning Prayer during the week.
Pam and George Allen have long supported St. Mark's Church in many ways. For example, Pam is the leader of the Spiritual Growth Ministry and George has been very helpful with the financial records at St. Mark's.
Each month a different book is chosen for reading and discussion. People usually bring a bag lunch; beverages are provided.
Remember to ask for your reading group discount at Bank Square Books (external Site). Our discussion will be on Tuesday, April 28 at 12:30 PM.

"The Diocese [of Connecticut] is divided into 14 geographic units called deaneries, each with an elected dean, sub-dean, secretary and treasurer. These were established decades ago as a way to improve communication and encourage collaborative ministry, and replaced an older model of archdeaconries."
"The diocesan bishop views the deanery system as a helpful way to gather clergy and parishes regionally. Confirmations are held on a deanery basis, and bishops meet with each deanery's clergy on a regular basis. Elected lay delegates to convention serve as delegates to their deanery as well."
The two quoted paragraphs are from the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut Web Site (external Site). The Seabury Deanery Site (WWW.SeaburyDeanery.Org) has much more information which is specific to the Seabury Deanery.
