May 2009 Calendar
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Mystic, Connecticut |
![]() |
Most events are held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic, CT 06355. Events held at other locations are emphasized by this font. Holy days and most secular holidays are noted this way. 5 Easter, for example, means the 5th Sunday in the Easter Season.
Daily or weekly events, such as Morning Prayer, the Holy Eucharist at StoneRidge, are described in detail on the Description & Schedule Page, along with some monthly events such as the Healing Service.
Deanery-wide Confirmation was celebrated at St. Mark's on Saturday the 2nd of May at 10:30 AM by retired Bishop Jeffrey Rowthorn, resigned Bishop Suffragan of Connecticut.
Cleaning of the Undercroft took place on Tuesday the 5th in preparation for painting which began on the 18th. The interior of the church will be repainted in June, 2009.
The Bishop's 5K for Kids on May 16th gave us an opportunity to run, walk, or sponsor someone else. There are photos of several parishioners and Fr. Mark.
Youth Sunday on May 17th saw the youth of St. Mark's Church taking the roles and responsibilities of the people who normally are ushers and lectors, ring the bell, deliver the homily, et cetera. There was a cupcake reception after the 10 AM Eucharist (that's where the name "Cupcake Sunday" comes from). Bob Welt gave us many fine photographs!
The painting of the Undercroft began on the 18th of May. This improvement is possible due to contributions to the Capital Campaign.
Lemonade on the Lawn and Summer Choir returned on May 24th, the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. Warm weather and green grass are here!
The Haitian Dinner on May 29th was very successful. There was Haitian-inspired food, Creole fellowship, and fun for everyone.

For the past six years, on the first Saturday of each month a group of St. Mark's Church School teachers, their children and grandchildren, and many of the children from the Church School and their parents visit the residents of Mystic Manor.
We do a seasonal craft, which usually consists of a drawing that we color and decorate with flowers, stickers, etc. Two or three times a year we have a party at Mystic Manor, to which we bring cookies and cupcakes. Mark Wydler plays his guitar and leads us all in song. Fr. Mark Santucci gives much comfort and cheer to all.

St. Mark's was host to the 2009 Confirmation for the Seabury Deanery. There were no candidates from St. Mark's confirmed this year.

The run and walk took place on a USATF-Certified course. The whole event benefitted the Bishop's Fund for Children, which enhances awareness about the plight of children at risk throughout Connecticut. This event raised funds to underwrite social service programs that aid children in our urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods.
Clicking on the logo at the left will take you to WWW.Bishops5kForKids.Org where you can see more photos and the results of the races.
There were both walkers and runners on St. Mark's team.
If you look closely, you'll see Gretchen in the women running, below. (There's a special photo below that shows her and her number 28, but we want you to be surprised when you see it.)
You'll see Doug's number 146 below, too.
For people who weren't walking or running, there were other activities.
Katie enjoyed having her face painted and clambering on the playground equipment. What concentration the artist shows!

The Crucifer carries the processional cross at the beginning and end of the service, with the acolytes and choir following.
This year most of the young people who took active roles in the service where also members of the choir.
Both of the young lectors read well, with their clear voices making the words easily understood.
Sarah was the cantor who led us in the Psalm.
Tim Larson did a fine job as our preacher at both the 8 o'clock and 10 o'clock services.
The Prayers of the People were read from near the back of the sanctuary, but could still be heard clearly.
On Youth Sunday acolytes and young choir members are given pectoral crosses in recognition of their service. The colors of the cords denote the number of years of service.
Fr. Mark gives each acolyte their cross and cord, then shakes hands and thanks them for their service.
Music Director David Tubbs presents crosses to the choir members individually.
After receiving their crosses, each choir member receives a handshake and a "Thank you" from Fr. Mark.
The young people are the future of St. Mark's Church, and it looks as if we're going to be in good hands for years to come.
We thank not only the youth, but their parents as well for bringing them to Sunday services, choir practice, the visits to Mystic Manor, and many other activities.
When it came time for the offering, the young people brought their "Mite Boxes" forward and put them on the altar.
There's an old tradition in the Episcopal Church that the service isn't over until all of the candles on the altar are extinguished. At St. Mark's we tend to be a little more casual....
There are as many ways of enjoying cupcakes as there are kids!
At the end of the morning, everybody was all smiles with the good feelings of jobs well done and cupcakes happily devoured.

From Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend, instead of gathering after each Sunday service for Coffee Hour in the Undercroft, we gather for lemonade on the lawn in front of the church. The Adult Forum, usually held between the 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM services, takes a summer vacation. The combination of warm weather, informality, and open space often means that we get to know one another better.
Don't like lemonade? There's always an alternative: Fruit juice, punch, or bottled water. There are cookies, brownies, et cetera, too.
As with Coffee Hour, volunteer hosts are always needed. It is a fine way to meet your fellow parishioners!

In Three Cups of Tea, Greg Mortenson and journalist David Oliver Relin recount the journey that led Mortenson from a failed 1993 attempt to climb Pakistan's K2, the world's second highest mountain, to successfully establish schools in some of the most remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan. By replacing guns with pencils and rhetoric with reading, Mortenson combines his unique background with his intimate knowledge of the third world to promote peace with books, not bombs, and successfully bring education and hope to remote communities in central Asia.
Three Cups of Tea is at once an unforgettable adventure and the inspiring true story of how one man is changing the world, one school at a time. More information can be found at the book's companion Web Site, WWW.ThreeCupsOfTea.Com (external Site).
Each month a different book is chosen for reading and discussion. People usually bring a bag lunch; beverages are provided.
Remember to ask for your reading group discount at Bank Square Books (external Site). Our discussion will be on Tuesday, May 28 at 12:30 PM.

"The Diocese [of Connecticut] is divided into 14 geographic units called deaneries, each with an elected dean, sub-dean, secretary and treasurer. These were established decades ago as a way to improve communication and encourage collaborative ministry, and replaced an older model of archdeaconries."
"The diocesan bishop views the deanery system as a helpful way to gather clergy and parishes regionally. Confirmations are held on a deanery basis, and bishops meet with each deanery's clergy on a regular basis. Elected lay delegates to convention serve as delegates to their deanery as well."
(The two quoted paragraphs are from the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut Web Site (external Site). The Seabury Deanery Site (WWW.SeaburyDeanery.Org) has much more information which is specific to the Seabury Deanery.

Friday the 29th saw us gather at 6 o'clock for Haitian food and a fun night of Creole fellowship as we get ourselves ready to travel to Haiti from October 14th to 19th.
As we look forward to our visit to our partners in mission in Haiti, the Outreach Ministry planned this Haitian Dinner Fundraiser to provide funds for a special gift that we will deliver personally to St. Luc's School in Haiti.
While a free-will offering raised money for our take-along gift, the dinner was also a time to enjoy fellowship as we celebrated the ministry we share with one another and the people of St. Luc's Church and School in Haiti.
