Most events are held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic, CT 06355. Events held at other locations are emphasized by this font. Holy days and most secular holidays are noted this way. 23 Pentecost, for example, means the 23rd Sunday after Pentecost.

Daily or weekly events, such as Morning Prayer, the Holy Eucharist at StoneRidge, are described in detail on the Description & Schedule Page, along with some monthly events such as the Healing Service.

Bishop Smith made his last official visit to St. Mark's on All Saints' Day, the first Sunday of November, 2009. Bishop Smith and Fr. Mark baptized Chloe C. and Kyler F. Please see the photos of Bishop Smith and the baptisms.

The American Girl Doll Tea Parties were a hit again this year. Many young ladies of all ages joined us on Friday the 6th and Saturday the 7th and brought their dolls to tea.

On the 14th of November there was a Wreath Workshop to prepare for the Christmas Bazaar on the 21st. There are some photos of the wreaths on the Christmas Bazaar Page.

On Commitment Sunday, November 15th, home visitations took place. There were no Sunday morning services; there was a single service at 4:30 PM in celebration of the home visits and stewardship. See the pictures of the Stewardship Dinner that followed the 4:30 service.

Apple Pie Making on the 17th was a fun activity. St. Mark's apple pies are always a big hit at the Christmas Bazaar.

The Christmas Bazaar attracted many people from the community and within St. Mark's Parish. Be sure to see the Christmas Bazaar Page for pictures!

Thanksgiving Dinner on the 26th is always a time for sharing with the whole community, not just members of the parish! Everyone is welcome as we give thanks for our many blessings. This year approximately 160 dinners were sent out and more were enjoyed in the Undercroft.

November Special Events

Bishop Andrew Smith visited and two children were baptized - All Saints' Day, Sunday November 1st

Bishop Smith's sermon was on the marks that we receive as baptized Christians, the now-invisible marks of the christening oil. He spoke of the Christian marks that should be visible daily: The ways in which we treat our fellow humans. He also spoke of saints who have died and saints who are living.

Bishop Smith preached an inspiring sermon. Bishop Smith prepares to bless the baptismal water while Miranda holds his crozier Fr. Mark baptizes Chloe C. Bishop Smith annoints Chloe with the oil of chrism Kyler calms down while Bishop Smith annoints him Fr. Mark baptizes a somewhat reluctant Kyler F.

At the sharing of the peace Bishop Smith personally greeted everyone present and shook hands.

The Sunday School people came from their classrooms, as usual, to be with us for Communion With them they brought bags of treats for Bishop Smith and Father Mark.

Emphasizing that all Christians are saints, each Godly Play participant had a sign around her or his neck.

Bishop Smith talks with Fr. Ernest and Mrs. Ernest Saint Alison, blushing Pauline welcomes Bishop Smith to St. Mark's

The people who had been baptized seemed a little more relaxed when they greeted us at the sharing of the peace.

Newly-baptized Chloe with her mom and dad

After the peace, Fr. Mark had his usual teaching moment with the children.

Children of many ages gather to listen to Fr. Mark's teaching moment

When the service was over, we celebrated Bishop Smith's visit with a reception in the Undercroft.

Marianne and Sandi poured tea and coffee, respectively Bishop Smith chats with parishoners who wish him well Bishop Smith thanks Madeline, St. Mark's office secretary, for all her work

Everyone at Saint Mark's Church in Mystic wishes Bishop Andrew Smith the very best in his retirement. We feel fortunate to have had him as our Diocesan Bishop.

Commitment Sunday - Sunday November 15th

Home visitations took place at the times that Sunday morning services would normally be held. There were no Sunday morning services.

Instead of the usual 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM Sunday services we were visited in our homes by volunteers who discussed stewardship and asked us to make our pledges.

At 4:30 PM we met in the Sanctuary for an in-gathering of pledges and a service of commitment. A dinner followed in the Undercroft. Everyone attending was happy, and some showed their enthusiasm more than others. Thanks to Bob Welt for these photographs!

Theology Sandwiched In - Thursday, November 19 at 12:00 Noon

The book for November was Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom.

Each month a different book is chosen for reading and discussion. People usually bring a bag lunch; beverages are provided.

Tuesdays with Morrie is the story of an old man (78 year old Morrie Schwartz, sociology professor at Brandeis University), a young man (Mitch Albom, a successful columnist of the Detroit Free Press), and their time together, through which Mitch shares Morrie's lasting gift with the world. The book was on the New York Times Bestseller List for two-hundred-fifty consecutive weeks.

Remember to ask for your reading group discount at Bank Square Books (external Site).

There will be no Theology Sandwiched In book discussion in December, 2009.

"The Diocese [of Connecticut] is divided into 14 geographic units called deaneries, each with an elected dean, sub-dean, secretary and treasurer. These were established decades ago as a way to improve communication and encourage collaborative ministry, and replaced an older model of archdeaconries."

"The diocesan bishop views the deanery system as a helpful way to gather clergy and parishes regionally. Confirmations are held on a deanery basis, and bishops meet with each deanery's clergy on a regular basis. Elected lay delegates to convention serve as delegates to their deanery as well."

(The two quoted paragraphs are from the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut Web Site (external Site). The Seabury Deanery Site (WWW.SeaburyDeanery.Org) has much more information which is specific to the Seabury Deanery.

Thanksgiving Dinner - Thursday, November 26th at 1:00 PM

Everyone is always welcome to Thanksgiving Dinner at St. Mark's!

Every year people from the community join us to celebrate Thanksgiving. This year about 160 dinners of turkey, stuffing, vegetables, and other favorites were sent out to people who couldn't be with us in person. More people sat down in the Undercroft to the same home-made feast. (Below are pictures from 2008. There are no pictures from 2009 because the usual photographers were busy serving.) Join us in 2010 for this community feast!

Photo of the delicious food being served, including Thanksgiving dinners to go. Tables full of people enjoy conversation after Thanksgiving dinner.

People of all ages enjoyed the food and warm conversation. The smiles on their faces are priceless!

People of all ages enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner at St. Mark's. There is no doubt about which part of the turkey this fellow liked the most!
