March 2010 Calendar
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Mystic, Connecticut |
![]() |
Most events are held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic, CT 06355. Events held at other locations are emphasized by this font. Holy days and most secular holidays are noted this way. 3 Lent, for example, means the 3rd Sunday of Lent.
Daily or weekly events, such as Morning Prayer, the Holy Eucharist at StoneRidge, are described in detail on the Description & Schedule Page, along with some monthly events such as the Healing Service.
Lent in 2010 began with Ash Wednesday on February 17th and continues for 46 days, concluding on Saturday the 3rd of April. The six Sundays are not counted as part of Lent's 40 days because each Sunday is a feast day, a "mini-Easter" celebrating Jesus's resurrection and His victory over sin and death.
Each year St. Mark's Church plans special programs and events during the Lenten season. On Wednesdays we gathered for a Contemplative Eucharist and Service of Healing. On Fridays we walked the Way of the Cross, a simple and moving Lenten remembrance of Jesus's journey to the cross. Please see the 2010 Lenten Programs Page for a full description of these programs. The 2010 Holy Week and Easter schedule and April 2010 Calendar are also available.

The 2010 Mystic Area Ecumenical Council Choir Festival delighted a church full of listeners at St. Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Church (which we usually call "St. Mary's") atop Fort Hill in Groton, CT.
The annual choir festival enables voices from many area church choirs to join forces in a special celebration of song. Both children and adults from Saint Mark's took part in the festival.
Jamie Spillane, formerly a member of Saint Mark's, was the guest director for this year's festival. He is the director of choral and vocal activities at Iowa Wesleyan. Jamie, who returns to Mystic each year to direct the Seaport Christmas Carol Sing, is the son of Niel and Dee Spillane.
Mike Noonan, who also grew up at St. Mark's, was the organist for the Festival.
Special thanks to Robert Welt for these photographs from the Festival!

"The Diocese [of Connecticut] is divided into 14 geographic units called deaneries, each with an elected dean, sub-dean, secretary and treasurer. These were established decades ago as a way to improve communication and encourage collaborative ministry, and replaced an older model of archdeaconries."
"The diocesan bishop views the deanery system as a helpful way to gather clergy and parishes regionally. Confirmations are held on a deanery basis, and bishops meet with each deanery's clergy on a regular basis. Elected lay delegates to convention serve as delegates to their deanery as well."
The two paragraphs quoted above are from the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut Web Site (external Site). The Seabury Deanery Site (WWW.SeaburyDeanery.Org) has much more information which is specific to the Seabury Deanery.

Everyone is invited to come and help celebrate the arrival of Spring by cleaning up the grounds. We spruce up the gardens and lawn for in preparation for Palm Sunday and Easter.
People of all ages and abilities can make a big difference in the external appearance of St. Mark's building and grounds.
Volunteers can help even after the official clean-up day! Weeds continue to grow and the plants get thirsty....

Our annual Ecumenical Palm Blessing and Procession began in Mystic River Park (external Site), a short walk across the Mystic River, at 9:30 AM. Together with our brothers and sisters from other denominations, we bless our palms in an ecumenical service.
After the service of palm blessing, we process to our several churches for the reading of the Passion and Eucharist.
From the Park to St. Mark's is about a quarter mile.
There are people who park their cars near Mystic River Park, walk with the procession to St. Mark's, and after the service carpool with other parishioners to go back to their cars at the Park.
Special thanks to Craig Koehler for these photographs of Palm Sunday 2010!

A family potluck supper is part of our observance each year. We begin in the church at 6 PM for the liturgy of the Word and the telling of the Holy Thursday story. From the sanctuary, we move to the Undercroft to break bread in Eucharist and in our potluck supper.
A prayer vigil is kept from 9 PM Maundy Thursday until noon on Good Friday. This vigil is kept in the Library, where people spend an hour in prayer and meditation before the Altar of Repose. Please consider helping to keep this vigil. There will be sign-up sheets in the Undercroft.

The Great Vigil of Easter is a liturgy not to be missed. Beginning in the dark night of Good Friday and ending in the light of Easter morning, the vigil includes remembrance of God's deliverance through the ages, baptism, and the first Eucharist of Easter.
