April 2010 Calendar
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Mystic, Connecticut |
![]() |
Most events are held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic, CT 06355. Events held at other locations are emphasized by this font. Holy days and most secular holidays are noted this way. 2 Easter, for example, means the 2nd Sunday in the Easter Season.
Daily or weekly events, such as Morning Prayer, the Holy Eucharist at StoneRidge, are described in detail on the Description & Schedule Page, along with some monthly events such as the Healing Service.
At the annual Progressive Supper and Lionheart Award presentation we honored two couples: Cally & Tim Evers and Joyce & Bill Everett. Please see the photos of the Progressive Supper and Lionheart Awards, below.
Lent in 2010 began with Ash Wednesday on February 17th and continues for 46 days, concluding on Saturday the 3rd of April. The six Sundays are not counted as part of Lent's 40 days because each Sunday is a feast day, a "mini-Easter" celebrating Jesus's resurrection and His victory over sin and death.
Each year St. Mark's Church plans special programs and events during the Lenten season. On Wednesdays we gathered for a Contemplative Eucharist and Service of Healing. On Fridays we walked the Way of the Cross, a simple and moving Lenten remembrance of Jesus's journey to the cross. Please see the Lenten Programs Page for a full description of these programs.

A family potluck supper will be part of our observance again this year. We will begin in the church at 6 PM for the liturgy of the Word and the telling of the Holy Thursday story. From the sanctuary, we will move to the Undercroft to break bread in Eucharist and in our potluck supper. After supper, those who wish to do so will return to the church for the stripping of the altar. Many people find this solemn service very moving.
A prayer vigil is kept from 9 PM Maundy Thursday until noon on Good Friday. This vigil is kept in the Library, where people spend an hour in prayer and meditation before the Altar of Repose. Please consider helping to keep this vigil. There will be sign-up sheets in the Undercroft.
Back to April 1 Back to top of April 2010 calendarThis one-hour service includes solemn prayers and Communion from the sacrament that was consecrated on Maundy Thursday and kept on the Altar of Repose over night.
The Stations of the Cross are walked beginning at 6 PM.
Please join us in these simple and moving Lenten remembrances of Jesus's journey to the cross.
Back to April 2 Back to top of April 2010 calendarThe Great Vigil of Easter is a liturgy not to be missed. Beginning in the dark night of Good Friday and ending in the light of Easter morning, the vigil includes remembrance of God's deliverance through the ages, baptism, and the first Eucharist of Easter.

Because the Diocese recommended that individuals not drive private cars, the Seabury Deanery (WWW.SeaburyDeanery.Org) arranged for transportation on buses. The buses left from St. David's Episcopal Church in Gales Ferry at 9 AM, giving us plenty of time to socialize with people from several parishes in the Deanery. The trip could not have been easier; we were dropped off and picked up right at the front doors of the Koeppel Center. The Hartford Courant reported that more than 2,000 people attended.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu's sermon was both humorous and passionate. The 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner stressed the importance of unity, a subject about which Bishop Douglas feels strongly. Archbishop Tutu said "We don't choose who is going to be my brother or my sister, though I wish I could. They are God's gift to me, as I am God's gift to them."
When he spoke directly to Bishop-elect Douglas, Archbishop Tutu said "Ian, please tell the children of God each one of them is precious. Each one of them is held in His cosmic embrace." The Archbishop urged all of us, ordained and lay people, to embrace everyone, including tea party activists, Democrats, Republicans, gays and lesbians. He got a big laugh when he included George Bush in the list of people to embrace.
The Most Reverend Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, lead the Ordination and Consecration after Archbishop Tutu had delivered the sermon.
It was widely commented that the service was the largest gathering of bishops and other clergy that any of us had ever seen.
To the left in the photo is the dais where the Presiding Bishop, Archbishop, and other clergy who had a major role in the ceremony were seated.
In the lower left of the photo, just visible, are the steel drums and other instruments that were so well played before, during, and after the service.
The pink-looking material hanging just to the left of the "Trinity" banner is the fabric that separated the backstage area from the ceremony area.
In the right of the photo the people in the opening procession are beginning to line up.
Dancers brought bowls of incense as part of the procession.
People of all ages were part of the procession.
The Koeppel Community Sports Center is used for hockey games; the ice was covered by removable panels, clearly visible here, for the Consecration and Ordination.
Not seen here are the banners that many parishes brought.
Archbishop Tutu addresses Presiding Bishop Schori before beginning his sermon.
Seated in the left foreground of the photo are Bishop Curry and Bishop Ahrens.
Bishop-elect Ian Douglas kneels before Presiding Bishop Schori as Archbishop Tutu descends the stairs.
Retired Connecticut Bishop Andrew Smith is visible to the Presiding Bishop's left, with Bishops Curry and Ahrens seeming to be in Archbishop Tutu's path.
The highlight of the day: Bishop-elect Ian Douglas kneels before Presiding Bishop Schori and is surrounded by bishops from all over the world.
After his Ordination and Consecration, Bishop Douglas said "The only thing I can say is that I am humbled and I am honored to be your bishop." "Now, it begins," he said, referring to his work toward his goal of making the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut a more welcoming community.
Bishop Douglas led the Eucharist, speaking in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. Hymns were sung in all three languages as well. Sign language interpreters signed the ceremony for the hearing impaired people who attended.
The steel drums in the foreground are only a small part of the steel drum band that was mentioned above.
Newly-consecrated Connecticut Bishop Ian Douglas is joined by his wife and three children plus friends and former parishioners for a group photo.

Each year we gather for a time of fellowship and appetizers, then go in small groups to Parish members' homes for the main course, and finally come back together in the Undercroft for desert and the presentation of the Lionheart Award.
In 2010 Carol and Bob Cushman were our hosts for the fellowship and cocktail hour (photo is above, left). The balloons made finding the entrance to the event easy. In the right photo above, Joan and Bob Ness's son is serving those of us who went to their home. Everyone enjoyed their dinners in all of the homes, and we all thank our hosts!
Each year the Lionheart Award is presented to a member or members of the Parish who has, for years, exemplified the qualities of stewardship and Christian love by giving time, talent, and treasure.
Two couples were the 2010 Lionheart Award recipients: Joyce & Bill Everett (on the left in the photo) and Cally & Tim Evers. Fr. Mark presented the couples with engraved silver bowls.
Thanks to the people who prepared the deserts! The goodies ranged from vitamin-filled brownies and mini-torts through trifle to mixed fresh fruit and berries.
At Coffee Hour on Sunday the 25th people who hadn't been able to join us for the Progressive Supper enjoyed some of the remaining deserts.

"The Diocese [of Connecticut] is divided into 14 geographic units called deaneries, each with an elected dean, sub-dean, secretary and treasurer. These were established decades ago as a way to improve communication and encourage collaborative ministry, and replaced an older model of archdeaconries."
"The diocesan bishop views the deanery system as a helpful way to gather clergy and parishes regionally. Confirmations are held on a deanery basis, and bishops meet with each deanery's clergy on a regular basis. Elected lay delegates to convention serve as delegates to their deanery as well."
The two paragraphs quoted above are from the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut Web Site (external Site). The Seabury Deanery Site (WWW.SeaburyDeanery.Org) has much more information which is specific to the Seabury Deanery.
