Most events are held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic, CT 06355. Events held at other locations are emphasized by this font. Holy days and most secular holidays are noted this way. 5 Epiphany, for example, means the 5th Sunday after The Epiphany.

Daily or weekly events, such as Morning Prayer, the Holy Eucharist at StoneRidge, are described in detail on the Description & Schedule of Services Page, along with some monthly events such as the Healing Service.

Some of February's Special Events:

Lent 2012 begins on Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2012.

Each year St. Mark's Church plans special programs and events during the Lenten season. Please see the Lent 2012 Page for details of all Lenten activities.

Shrove Tuesday, February 21, 2012 (also known as Mardi Gras 2012) – Pancake Supper

On Shrove Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras, February 21, the men of the parish will take over the kitchen to cook and serve St. Mark's traditional Pancake Supper.

Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2012

As usual, there will be the Holy Eucharist at StoneRidge at 10:30 AM. There will be a 7:00 PM Holy Eucharist service in the Sanctuary at St. Mark's also. Ashes will be imposed at both services. Special note to newcomers and visitors: The Episcopal tradition is for each person to decide whether they wish to receive ashes.

The Way of the Cross – Fridays during Lent

On Fridays during Lent we walk The Way of the Cross (also known as the Stations of the Cross), a simple and moving Lenten remembrance of Jesus's journey to the cross.

Food for Body & Soul – Wednesdays during Lent, beginning on February 29

This year's Food for Body & Soul on Wednesday evenings during Lent feature a simple supper of soup, salad, and bread followed by discussion. More details will be available soon.

February 2012 Special Events

Mission trip to St. Luc's, Haiti – February 9 through 14, 2012

A mission group from St. Mark's will be heading to St. Luc's Church and School in Mercery, Haiti on February 9th.

Members of the mission group have been working on learning Haitian Creole in preparation for the trip. The trip isn't just social, however. The group will be building new desks and benches for the school. Fr. Kerwin Delicat, priest in charge, said "This is more than important for the school at this time, because actually many school kids are using blocks to sit [on] while they are at school."

Please keep the mission group in your prayers. Please contact Tim Evers or Fr. Mark for more information.

Danger: Men cooking! Pancake Supper – Shrove Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 6:00 PM

Everyone is always welcome, parish family, guests, and friends. Visitors and newcomers are especially welcome to special events!

On Shrove Tuesday it is a St. Mark's tradition for the men of the Parish cook and serve a pancake supper in the Undercroft. Women are barred from the kitchen and from serving. Everyone enjoys the meal and fellowship. So far, everyone is reported to have survived the men's cooking....

The Way of the Cross – Fridays in Lent, beginning at 6:00 PM

Join us each Lent in this simple and moving remembrance of Jesus's journey to the cross. This observance was brought home by pilgrims to Jerusalem who had retraced Jesus's steps and found it extremely meaningful.

The Diocese of Connecticut is divided into 14 geographic areas called deaneries.

"Deaneries were originally seen as a streamlined way to get information distributed from the bishops to the clergy and congregations in parishes. That purpose waned over the years with the advent of electronic communication, but the concept of meeting and organizing in groups smaller than the entire diocese - which includes over 170 parishes and hundreds of clergy - continues to hold value for the bishops as well as those within the deaneries.

"Deaneries hold meetings to elect deans and subdeans, elect representatives to the diocesan executive council, and meet to consider the proposed diocesan budget and proposed resolutions in advance of the annual diocesan convention. Deanery approval is needed by parishes or other local organizations seeking diocesan Mission Development Grants. Clergy meet by deaneries, in "clericus" meetings, and confirmations are organized by deaneries."

The three paragraphs quoted above are from the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut Web Site. Calling the Seabury Deanery "An association of the Episcopal Churches in New London County" is not entirely accurate. The Seabury Deanery Site (WWW.SeaburyDeanery.Org) has much more information which is specific to the Seabury Deanery.

Handbell Choir Reunion – Near Easter, 2012

A bell choir reunion is planned for some time around Easter. Ringers who were once in St. Mark's bell choir are being encouraged to return, and new ringers are welcome.

Please talk to David Tubbs, Organist and Director of Music, for information. (It is very, very difficult for your WebMaster to avoid puns such as "chime in".)
