Lenten Activities for 2012 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church

Lent began on Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2012 and lasts through Good Friday, April 6, 2012.

Shrove Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 6:00 PM – Pancake Supper

On Shrove Tuesday, February 21, (also known as Mardi Gras 2012) the men of the parish invaded the (virtual) kitchen to cook and serve St. Mark's traditional Pancake & Sausage Supper. Click on the photo to see the whole gallery of photos.

Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2012

There was the usual Holy Eucharist at StoneRidge at 10:30 AM. There was a 7:00 PM Holy Eucharist service in the Sanctuary at St. Mark's also. Ashes were imposed at both services. The Episcopal tradition is for each person to decide for themselves whether they wish to receive ashes.

Body, Mind, and Spirit

Please join the Thursday morning Bible Study as we explore the connections between our physical, spiritual, mental, and social selves in these discussions into modern science, faith, and healing practice using audio clips from the Public Radio show On Being, with Krista Tippett. Topics include yoga, stress, and finding balance.


The Way of the Cross – Fridays during Lent, beginning at 6:00 PM

On Fridays during Lent we walk The Way of the Cross (also known as the Stations of the Cross), a simple and moving Lenten remembrance of Jesus's journey to the cross.

Food for Body & Soul – Wednesdays during Lent, beginning on February 29 at 6:00 PM

Windows into the Light: A Lenten Journey of Stories and Art
Soup, Salad, and Soulful Interaction

This year's Food for Body and Soul on Wednesday evenings during Lent feature a simple supper of soup, salad, and bread followed by discussion of the scripture passage for the week. A narrative will expand on the themes introduced by the scripture. Exercises following the narratives are simple (mostly collage exercises using different techniques) and accessible to a wide audience.

Noonday prayer begins at 11:45 AM in the church. Luncheon is served from 12 Noon until 1:30 PM. The suggested donation for adults is $10.00; there is no charge for children under six.

Luncheons are served in the Calvary Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 33 Church Street, Stonington Borough.

Lenten Fish and Chips Fellowship Dinners – Fridays in Lent, 2012
St. James' Episcopal Church, Poquetanuck, Connecticut

February 24, March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

For the 47th consecutive year, the community at St. James' Poquetanuck will be hosting the Friday Lenten Fish and Chips Dinners. You will have your choice of fried or baked fish, accompanied by fries (or not), the famous coleslaw, and desserts that are 100% home made. A variety of beverages is also served. The prices are $9.50 for adults, $8.50 for seniors, $5.00 for children under 12. There is no charge for preschool-age children to enjoy the fish & chips.

The tradition of having each week celebrate a specific theme continues; everyone is invited to get into the spirit.

February 24 – President's Day
Honor those who have served as presidents by donning some red, white, and blue. Patriotic music will be featured.
March 2 – Bonnie McPadden Birthday Celebration
Bonnie McPadden, St. James' most senior parishioner, celebrates her 95th birthday today; she was born on this date in 1917. Recorded music of the era of Bonnie's birth will be featured ("Over There", "K-K-K-K-Katy", "How You Gonna Keep 'Em Down on the Farm", for example).
March 9 – Honoring the Girl Scouts of America
Girl Scouts officially celebrate their 100th anniversary on March 12. In 1943, St. James' Church established its Troop 75, three scouting groups meet at St. James', and several scouts support the Fish and Chip Dinners by serving at table. Recorded music of scouting songs will be featured.
March 16 – St. Patrick's Day
Plan on wearing the green and appropriate Irish-related garb or paraphernalia. Entertainment will feature Celtic music by Mike LaFleur, Keith Buck, Peter Leibert, and friends.
March 23 – Spring Theme
While it may be hard to envision, spring is just around the corner. The fifth week of fish and chips celebrates this hope of spring. Feel free to sport rain gear or spring attire.
March 30 – March Madness
A year ago, both UConn teams performed amazingly well. This year will be a challenge, especially for the men. Come sporting your favorite team attire and bring souvenirs of your favorite team. Recorded Sports Mix Music will be provided for your entertainment.
