The Quilters at St. Mark's Episcopal Church make quilts for sale at the annual Christmas Bazaar, including making custom quilts to order.
In the 1970's Ruth Palmer, from Christ United Methodist Church in Groton, traveled to many area churches to teach quilting. She asked for nothing in return, but left a legacy of love, talent, and giving.
The Quilters started more than 30 years ago when Ruth Palmer taught members of the Craft Group how to quilt. Since then, the Quilters have met every Tuesday, from spring through the last Tuesday before the Bazaar. Usually four to eight people meet in the Undercroft at 9:00 AM and work (and chat) until noon. Because the setting is very informal, people arrive when they can and leave when they are tired or have another obligation. Many of the Quilters bring their lunch with them. In addition to the work and fellowship they share on Tuesdays, some Quilters take work home with them.
You can expect to see about half a dozen full-size quilts and eight to ten baby quilts at the Bazaar. In addition, there are usually placemats and table runners. Special orders can be placed during the year.
The Quilters would be happy to teach anyone who would like to join them; you do not have to be a member of the Parish. Experience is not required; people who are not comfortable sewing can trace patterns, cut out pieces, et cetera.
