As often occurs, God's presence moved a child, who in turn, moved an adult. St. Mark's Youth Group (SMYG) evolved from a young person's desire to share spiritual growth and development with others within her age group. To that end, she encouraged her mother to assist her in transforming this idea into a reality. The mission, as it was envisioned, was to foster young persons' interests in social activities and community outreach. In addition, the group was to provide fun and friendship through regular meetings and excursions. As a result, the first SMYG meeting occurred in October 1997.
SMYG has traveled to Rhode Island for a Haunted Hay Ride, and participated in the St. Mark's Bazaar, setting up and staffing the Kid's World Room, and selling their own hand-made crafts. They also shared the spirit of the Christmas season with residents of Mystic Manor, a local nursing home. There, they strolled the halls singing carols. Grace Pease spoke to the group about the difficulties facing many families in our area. SMYG responded by preparing a Christmas Basket of food and gifts for a family of six.
For many of these events the children used money earned at bake sales held during Adult Forum. In January 1998, SMYG traveled to New York City to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine's Night Watch. In February they got together for a Bowling and Planning Meeting at Holiday Bowl. Other events have included preparing a Lenten Supper in April and coloring eggs for the Easter Morning Egg Hunt. In May, SMYG plans to sponsor a St. Mark's Talent Show to celebrate and share the God-given gifts of parishioners. Also in the works is a night of volunteering in a soup kitchen and a Car Wash to fund a trip to Riverside Park.
SMYG is open to all youth in grades 6, 7, and 8. SMYG meets in the Undercroft every other Sunday evening. At present, there are 14 active members and two adult advisors. Anyone interested in joining is urged to call the church office at 572-9549.
