Resting All My Weight
A continuation of last week’s reflection on the meaning of the word “believe,” focusing on the story of Thomas.
When the Risen Christ invites Thomas to touch his wounds, Thomas responds with a powerful declaration: “My Lord and my God!” Jesus says, “Happy are those who don’t see and yet believe”. A story about a Bible scholar in the Amazon illustrates this well. When the scholar struggled to translate “believe,” a local farmer explained it as resting all his weight in a chair after a long day.
Just as a child trusts a parent to catch them when they leap, true belief in God means fully depending on Him. Unlike human beings, who can fail, God is always faithful—the sure foundation on which everything rests.
